Meridian Water Polo Club | Spring Session Recap

May 4, 2026

Meridian Community,

As we close our Spring session, John and I have spent time reflecting on what this phase has represented for our athletes and for the club as a whole. If Winter was about building the foundation, Spring has been about applying it — taking what was learned and bringing it to life in real game environments.

This session asked more of the girls. The training shifted toward applied, game-driven scenarios where athletes were challenged to recognize advantages, manage tempo, and make decisions with clarity under pressure. The focus was not just on executing skills, but on understanding when and why to use them. We emphasized connecting individual ability to team systems, increasing the pace of play, and developing deeper game intelligence and tactical awareness.

With that shift came an increase in competition. This Spring, the group competed across Cal Cup NorCal events, Cal Cup State Finals, and four Futures weekends. Each setting provided a different level of challenge, and with it, an opportunity to test growth in real time. The girls also took a Spring Break trip to Southern California where they went undefeated in SoCal Cal Cup play, while also training alongside San Clemente, Newport, and Santa Barbara. Experiences like these accelerate development — not just in performance, but in confidence, cohesion, and belief.

What makes this Spring particularly meaningful is the context in which it happened. Balancing a demanding water polo schedule alongside high school swim season is not easy. It requires discipline, sacrifice, and a level of commitment that cannot be manufactured. The girls showed up anyway — often tired, often stretched — but consistently with purpose. They supported one another, lifted each other through the difficult moments, and found joy in the process.

That is what stands out most.

This past weekend, as we wrapped the final Futures competition, John and I found ourselves reflecting not just on results, but on the response of the group. The consistency. The resilience. The willingness to stay committed to the work and to each other. Those are the markers of real growth.

The bonds within this team continue to strengthen. There is a growing understanding that success is not individual — it is shared. It is built through trust, accountability, and a collective standard that the athletes are beginning to define for themselves. That evolution is what allows everything else — tactics, systems, execution — to come together in a meaningful way.

We could not be more proud of this group.

To the parents, thank you for the continued belief and support through a demanding season. Your role in creating the environment around these athletes is essential, and it does not go unnoticed.

As we look ahead to Summer, we will continue to build on this momentum — raising the standard, deepening the work, and preparing for the next phase of competition. The path forward remains the same: intentional, demanding, and rooted in long-term development.

The journey continues, and we are grateful to be on it together.

Phinean & John
