The Competition Pathway

No one improves in games
that ask nothing of them.

Every stage should demand more than the one before it.
Competition is organized around readiness. Each stage introduces greater technical, tactical, and competitive demands so athletes continue growing rather than simply moving forward.

How the stages work

An athlete is placed where
she'll be stretched.

The age groups aren't labels for how good someone is. They're levels of demand. 14U establishes the habits and the standard. 16U turns individual ability into reliable performance inside a team system. 18U prepares an athlete for what collegiate coaches will expect of her on day one.

Eligibility follows USA Water Polo's birth-year cutoffs, not school grade — so a freshman may compete at 14U and a junior at 16U. Within that, what moves an athlete forward is readiness: measured against defined markers, reviewed continuously, and discussed openly with her and her family. Nobody is advanced to fill a roster spot, and nobody is held back to protect a result.

You don't get better by winning. You get better by being asked to.

Our teams

Three stages.
One progression.

Meridian 14U program At capacity · Fall 2026

Age 14 and under

14U

Where the standard begins. Disciplined technical instruction, spatial awareness, and learning to contribute inside a team — plus the habits that make the next three years possible: showing up prepared, taking coaching, and holding yourself to what you agreed to.

Meridian 16U program

Age 16 and under

16U

Where ability becomes reliability. Athletes apply technique inside team systems, read situations rather than react to them, and learn that consistency under fatigue is worth more than a highlight. This is the stage where a player stops being promising and starts being counted on.

Meridian 18U program Adding after the 2026 HS season

Age 18 and under

18U

Where an athlete is prepared for what comes next. Advanced movement, tactical execution, and in-game adaptability, trained in sessions built to simulate the pace and pressure of collegiate play — with leadership expected rather than assigned.

Beyond the competitive roster

Not every athlete arrives on a roster.
The standard is available to all of them.

Meridian Academy runs outside the team structure — beginner on-ramp sessions, private lessons, and position-specific training for athletes who want more reps than a season provides.
