NorCal Cal Cup | Tournament Recap

Over two weekends at NorCal Cal Cup, our 16U group finished the tournament 3–1. Our only loss came in our very first tournament game as a newly formed MIRA club, a 10–9 loss to Santa Cruz, the eventual second-place finisher.

While the result did not go our way, the game itself was an important early lesson. We had multiple opportunities throughout the match to take control and win, while Santa Cruz created fewer chances but converted at a higher rate. That distinction matters. Execution under pressure is something that can only be learned through experience, and this was a valuable one for our group.

Despite falling behind by multiple goals early, the girls showed composure and resolve, clawing their way back into the game and competing toe-to-toe with a high-quality opponent until the final whistle. That response told us a lot about who this group is.

Over the next three games, we steadily improved our execution as a team. That progression is a core principle of MIRA: getting better individually and collectively every time we get in the water. By the final session, that growth was evident across all phases of the game.

We finished the tournament ninth overall, with a goal differential of +29. The final match against Arroyo Grande, a strong and well-respected program, was a clear reflection of our trajectory. An 11–1 halftime lead was the result of disciplined defense, winning first in transition, executing all three phases of the counterattack, and finishing offensively on the opportunities we created.

Most importantly, the way this team competed and lifted one another stood out. The difference between how we started and how we finished speaks to the character and resolve of this group.

The journey is long. What defines MIRA Water Polo Club is how we approach each practice and each game with purpose, energy, and resolve. This tournament was an early step, and a strong one, in building something meaningful together.
